Steinlein waited for me at the top of the stairs, both hands clenching the top of his walking stick.

“Where have you been?”

I moved past him into our office. “At the Ministry, talking to Unit 9.”

He stared at me for a few moments, eyes narrowed almost to slits. “Well, we might as well pack up now, that’s it—it’s all over.”

“Unit 9 are going to provide close protection to Kaminsky. They’re taking the threat seriously. And Minister Rosen is on the case, he’ll be receiving hourly reports and will be in constant contact during the event.”

“Dietmar Rosen? Just another hack, covering his own back!”

“Our informant gave us detailed plans. It was my duty to pass on that information.”

“Perhaps. Maybe you’re right. At least now they can’t act surprised when it happens, not now they know RS is involved.” Steinlein’s voice was muted, but then his head snapped up. “Did you mention me?”

I shook my head and Steinlein relaxed.

“My name didn’t come up at all?”

“No. I told them I was acting on my own initiative. They think I was following up a tip-off.”

“Good, good.” Steinlein seemed to gain energy again. “Good work.” He got up from the chair and headed for the stairs. “I better get back to the station, still lots to do, meetings and briefings. I’ll meet you in Treptow in the morning. I’ll be there from 0600 hours, doing a sweep of the park with my squad.”

That went better than expected. I breathed a sigh of relief and was about to sit in the chair just vacated by Steinlein before I realised there wasn’t anything else to do. We’d done all we could, and tomorrow we would find out if it had been enough.

“Can you give me a lift?” I shouted down the stairs.

“I can drop you off at Ostkreuz.”
